Profits versus quality in video game development

Authored by Bob Lohblaw on 2010/08/20 at 03:14 PM

This Fall two "blockbuster" games will be launched for the Xbox 360.  You probably thought of them before you finished reading that sentence; Halo:Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops.  Two big games and two big marketing budgets.  Activision has even come out and said that Black Ops will have the largest marketing budget to date.  The problem is I just don't find myself all that excited about either game even though  I'm a huge fan of both franchises.  For me, Call of Duty 4 was as good as it could get and when MW2 was announced I could barely wait.  It's not that I didn't like MW2, but it just felt like I had been playing the game for the past three years.  Same thing with Halo.  Halo 2 was the end all multiplayer game when it came out and was the first game that was able to hold my attention for more than 6-8 months.  Halo 3 shows up on the scene with an amazing marketing campaign and a huge launch, but the experience of the game left me with that same feeling; I've played this before.
